A 3-day training for Mortuary workers in DUFUTH has ended with a call on them to always adopt safety conscious practices in handling of corpses to minimize risk of exposure to workplace hazards.
The training which was organised for Morticians, selected Scientific officers and Administrative officers drilled participants on basic knowledge crucial for effective mortuary services and workplace safety procedures.
Professor Akinjobi Comfort, a Microbiologist and the resource person, reemphasized the need for proper handling of infectious bodies in the mortuary as dead bodies are immune to micro organisms.
One of the preventive measures she advocated was regular hand washing, use of PPEs such as protective shoes and hand gloves, against bodies infected with Ebola, Lassa Fever and other transmittable ailments.
She also suggested safe burial practices and use of protective appliances in conformity with environmental health norms and standards.
In a remark, the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Dr Ehidiamhen Felix stressed the need for proper documentation of all dead bodies and listed the types of embalment that will be used to preserve the bodies.
He also re-echoed the need for safety protocols and precautionary measures when receiving dead bodies into the mortuary.
